OUR RECENT PROJECTS
The Kentucky Classical Theatre Conservatory’s (KCTC) SummerFest 2008 is a continuation of the Lexington Shakespeare Festival. In 2003, the Lexington Shakespeare Festival was ranked fifth in the nation for outdoor festivals of its kind. In 2007, KCTC took over the reins of a waning festival and in two short years has rebuilt and re-organized the festival into a strong, vibrant company drawing just short of 7000 patrons over its three week season during its second year at the Arboretum.
Bluegrass Scenic Studios has worked with KCTC for the past two years to breathe new life into the defunct festival. By providing expert design, engineering, renovation, and project management, BGSS has laid a stable foundation from which KCTC can continue to grow for years to come.

"It's a Grand Night for Singing", presented by University of Kentucky Opera
Theatre (UKOT), is sweet 16 this year. The musical program “It’s a Grand Night for Singing!”will celebrate 16 years of show stopping performances in the Bluegrass as it returns to the stage this summer, known for its performances of some of Hollywood and Broadway's most beloved tunes.
This year's theme of "The Great American Songbook: From Billboard to Broadway" promises to fill the seats once again featuring some of the best university and homegrown Bluegrass talents. This season’s brand new set built by David R. Steinmetz of Bluegrass Scenic Studios was designed by Robert Pickering making its debut at the popular event. Pickering has designed for Santa Fe Opera, the Utah Shakespeare Festival and many other opera, theatre and ballet productions.
The University of Kentucky Department of Theatre presents "As it is in Heaven," a play by Arlene Hutton, on the lives of nine Shaker women at Kentucky's Shaker Village of Pleasant Hill. This production of will be a special one, as the play will make its debut in its original setting of Shaker Village of Pleasant Hill, west of Lexington, Kentucky. The performances of "As it is in Heaven" will be held in an open air barn overlooking the historic site of the Shaker community.
Capturing the “era of manifestations” in early 19th century Shaker culture is set at the popular Kentucky Shaker community that inspired Hutton's work. The period in question was a time of heightened divinity and strange behavior within the Shaker community. During the era, numerous accounts chronicled curious behavior among nine Shaker sisters who experienced unusual trancelike behaviors, communicated with "angels" and described journeys to "heavenly places."

The Hotel Casablanca is an original opera composed by Thomas Pasatieri and produced as a world premier by the University of Kentucky Opera Program partnered with the San Francisco Opera’s Merola Opera Program. This project broke new ground by partnering one of the big five opera companies with a public university for the first time in such a meaningful way. Bluegrass Scenic Studios was there every step of the way, providing first rate engineering and construction of the scenery and properties to take on the road to San Francisco and back.
